지구 온난화의 경고 이후 ‘환경’은 전 세계인에게 중요한 키워드가 되었다. 한국 정부 또한 환경정책을 주요하게 다루고 있다. 그렇지만 아직까지 정부의 환경정책은 인간과 자연이 조화롭게 상생하는 방향이기 보다는 개발과 경제적 성장, 그리고 도시 미화를 위한 것으로 보인다. 온실가스 배출 증가 속도도 지난 1990 ~ 2001년간 타 OECD 국가들과 비교할 때 가장 빠르게 증가하고 있는 것으로 조사되고 있으며(그래프), 서울의 온난화 속도는 세계 평균 3배 이상 빨리 진행되고 있다.(그래프) 이런 상황에서 하자작업장학교는 기후변화시대의 리빙리터러시 라는 프로젝트를 시작했다. 이 프로젝트는 기후변화시대를 살고 있는 10대들이 지구촌 에서의 삶을 어떻게 읽고 쓸 것인지에 대해 논의하고 공부하는 시간이다.

After the warning of global warming, 'environment' has become an important keyword for all global citizens. Korean government is also working on environment policies. But it still looks as if they are thinking of it as a development of the economy and beautifying the city. Not as a peaceful coexistence of human and nature. The speed of increase in greenhouse gases compared to other OECD nations during 1990 and 2001, Korea is heading toward the top.(Graph) Global warming of Seoul city is 3 times faster than the world average rate.(Graph) Facing this situation, Haja Production School started a project called 'Living literacy in the time of climate change'. This project is a time of studying and discussing how teenagers, living in the time of climate change are going to read and write about the life inside this global village.

처음 프로젝트를 시작했을 때에는 기후변화에 대해 관심을 가지고 있었던 사람도 있었고 전혀 관심이 없었던 사람도 있었다. 하지만 한 학기동안 기후변화시대의 여러 현상들과 개개인의 실천들을 다루고 난 지금 모두 어떤 방식으로 프로젝트를 접근 했던 간에 우리의 삶의 터전인 지구상에서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 알게 되었다. 또한 이 시대를 잘 읽어낼 수 있는 눈과 그에 따른 10대들의 개입을 생각하게 되었다.

At the beginning of the project, there might have been some already interested in the climate change issue, or some might even knew nothing about it. However, 3 months of this project had passed and no matter how much we were ignorant about it, we now know what is happening in this earth. And we have started to think about how we could exercise our opinions.

프로젝트를 시작한 초기에는 지구온난화 문제와 이에 대처하여 사는 여러 지역의 사례에 관련 된 영상을 보며 기후변화시대에 대한 문제를 의식하기 시작했다. 브라질의 환경도시 꾸리찌바에 대한 다큐멘터리나, 영화 11번째 시간, 나우루 섬의 상황을 다룬 티브이 르뽀를 보면서 인간의 욕심이 초래한 재앙을 스스로에게 경고할 수 있었다. 이후 봄이 시작되는 3월, 우리는 한시간동안 모든 전기에너지를 끄고 어쿠스틱 악기를 이용해 지구를 위한 한시간을 보내기도 했고, 꽃씨를 심고, 심어둔 식물들을 돌보며, 정원을 만드는 꽃씨파티를 진행했다.

At the start of the project we watched various videos about how different areas are tackling the global warming issue and started to be conscious of the problems of climate change. The documentary on the eco-friendly city 꾸리찌바(Curitiba) in Brazil, the film 11th hour, the TV report on the history of 나우루공화국(Republic of Nauru). Watching this we could warn ourselves of the disasters brought by the greed of our human race. In March we tried the Earth Hour event, turning off all the electricity in Haja Center and spending an hour for the earth, singing with acoustic instruments. And started taking care of the gardens in Haja, planting seeds and vegetables during Seed Party.

동시에 생태적인 문제 뿐 아니라 무분별한 자원사용, 개발의 과속화, 신자유주의의 과열경쟁이 빚어내는 삶의 위기들에 대해 논의 하였다. 영화 슬럼독 밀리어네어를 보며, 인도의 슬럼가 뭄바이에 대해 알아보거나, '슬럼, 지구를 뒤덮다'라는 책을 함께 읽으면서 전 세계 많은 도시들의 급격한 슬럼현상이 사람들의 삶을 어떻게 위협하고 있는지 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 또한 서울의 공격적인 도시미화와 재개발이 초래한 삶의 비극들에 대해 들여다 보면서 비판적인 시각을 키우기도 했다

At the same time, we not only talked about ecology but the waste of resources, acceleration of development, the life in crisis built within the competitive Neo-liberal society. We watched Slumdog Millionaire and learned about the slums in Mumbai, India and read the book 'Planet of slums' together and found out about how the slumization of cities are threatening the lives of us. We grew a critical mind through looking at the aggressive redevelopment in Seoul city and about the tragedy it has caused.

프로젝트를 마무리 할 즈음에 우리는 현재 우리가 어떤 조건에서 살고 있고, 어떤 지구에서, 어떤 도시에서 살고 있는지 질문해 보기도 했다. 더불어 왜 우리가 지금 이러한 이야기를 중요하게 다루고 있는지, 10대인 우리에게 이상적 삶의 공간과 조건은 무엇이고, 도시에서 청소년으로 살아가는 것은 무엇인지를 주제로 이야기가 오고 갔다. 이어 이런 질문들을 홍콩창의력학교의 학생들에게도 던지고, 각각 서울과 홍콩이라는 거대 도시에서 사는 청소년들이 기후변화 시대를 바라보고 있는 시각에 대해 논의하기 위한 유스토크를 기획했다. 세차례의 비디오 컨퍼런스를 시도했고, 이 유스토크를 통해 <기후변화시대를 살아가는 10대들의 창의적 제안> 이라는 선언문을 만들었다. 또한 서울을 방문한 홍콩의 청소년들과 함께 청계광장과 홍대지역에 나가 우리의 제안을 담은 피켓을 들고 일종의 시위를 진행했다.

We questioned ourselves of which earth and which city are we living and with what condition. In addition, why we are taking this issue seriously. What are the ideal living conditions that we dream of as teenagers, what it means to be a teenager in a city. From the Youth Talk we planned between Haja and Hong Kong School of Creativity, we shared our views on the time of climate change. We came up with a teenagers' manifesto called 'A creative suggestion by teenagers living in the time of climate change' after 3 times of the video conference. And then we went out to demonstrate in 청계 square and 홍대 area with our manifesto written on picket signs.

다음으로 홍조와 어쓰가 우리가 진행했던 실천들 가운데 비중있게 다루었던 두가지의 이벤트에 대해 좀더 설명해 줄 것이다.
