자치와 연대를 통한 민주 교육 공동체 만들기

지금 세계는 연결되어 있다. 안타깝게도 그 연결성이 지니는 긍정적인 측면도 있지만 이번 경우처럼 우리 모두를 당황하게 하는 부정적인 측면으로 이끌어가기도 한다. 비본질적인 것의 영향으로 본질적인 것이 훼손되는 현상들을 우리들은 실감하고 있다. 성심성의껏 준비한 IDEC을 열지 못하게 된 것이 무척이나 안타깝고, 또 오랫동안 기다려온 세계 민주교육 식구들을 만나지 못하게 된 것이 못내 아쉽다. 아마도 거대한 신자유주의 세계화가 추구하는 물질주의와 환경파괴를 전제로한 무한성장의 논리는 앞으로도 지속적으로 전지구를 위협하게 될 가능성이 매우 높다.

우리는 힘들지만 새로운 고리들을 만들어가야 한다. 그 고리는 생명의 네트워크이며 본질적인 삶을 추구하는 이들의 폭넓은 공동체이다. 참된 문명을 고민하는 이들의 작은 움직임이며 생명을 위협하고 물질에 종속되는 제반 조건을 극복해 나가려는 민주적 운동이어야 할 것이다. 생명을 해치는 유해 바이러스에 맞서는 새로운 생명 바이러스를 만드는 작업이기도 하다. 

그 중심에 교육이 있다. 대다수를 패배자로 몰아가고 빈곤의 악순환 고리에서 빠져 나오지 못하게 하는 일방적 교육에서 벗어나 자치를 실현하고 참된 민주성을 실험할 수 있는 해방구들이 절대적으로 필요하다. 다수의 사람들이 소수 지배자의 논리에 의해 지배되고 있다. 이것은 다수가 자신의 생명성과 존엄성을 자각하지 못한 채 소수 지배세력의 논리에 종속되어 마치 그 논리가 자신의 것인양 착각하며 살아가기 때문이다. 참된 대안교육, 민주교육은 옳지 않은 것에 대한 불복종과 새로운 세계를 향한 창조정신을 어느 때보다도 요청되는 시기이다. 

21세기 지구는 여러가지 어려운 문제에 부딪혀 있다. 

첫째는 생태적 위기이다. 생태적 삶을 산다는 것은 삶의 태도를 근본적으로 바꾸는 것을 의미한다. 많이 벌어 많이 소비하는 것이 성공이고 행복이라고 생각하게 하는 방식에서 벗어나 소박하고 단순한 삶을 살아가는 것에서 행복을 찾는 것을 뜻한다. 비민주적 교육은 마구 소비하는 인간을 성공한 인간으로 규정하고 협동보다는 경쟁을 부추기고 개인의 이기심을 극대화하는데 아무런 거리낌이 없다. 우리는 연결된 존재이다. 우리의 생명은 다른 생명과 연결되어 있을 뿐 아니라 자연과 연결되어 있어 그 생명을 부지한다. 연결된 존재로서의 인간을 자각하고 자연을 더 이상 소유로 보지 않는 이들의 공동체가 요구된다.

둘째는 사회양극화 현상이다. 극소수에게 물질과 문화가 집중되는 현상은 전세계의 공통적 현상이다. 우리가 받아온 교육도 경쟁을 전제한 살아남기, 대다수를 들러리 인생으로 만드는 상생을 전혀 논할 수 없는 것이었다. 골고루 가난한 사회이면서 문화적으로 풍부하고 삶의 질을 높이는 것은 불가능한 것인가? 아마도 인류는 상생의 공동체 실험을 꾸준히 해 왔고 한 국가보다도 더 오래 지탱해 온 수도원 운동을 통해서 노동과 학문, 명상과 봉사의 단순하고도 공생적인 삶이 가능함을 시사해 준다. 사회양극화를 합리화하는 잘못된 교육의 틀을 지양하고 함께 살아갈 수 있는 교육공동체 모델을 곳곳에서 만들어 가기를 바라는 것이다. 

세번째는 인간 소외 문제이다. 연결의 고리를 잃어버린 현대인은 고립되어 있고 상처를 지니고 있다. 물질이 해결해 줄 수 없는 영혼을 지닌 것이 인간이기에 그만큼 아파하고 힘들어한다. 참된 교육은 자신을 찾지 못하고 이웃과 아무런 사랑을 나누지 못하고 자연과 교감하지 못하는 이들을 위해 치유와 소통의 작업을 해 나가야 할 것이다. 참된 영성을 회복하고 보이는 것으로 행복을 규정하지 않으며 관계 속에서 희망을 찾아가는 공동체적 인간을 바라는 것이다.  
 
세계 곳곳에서 조용히 대안적 문명을 준비하고 삶의 고리들을 함께 만들어가는 흐름들을 주시해 보자. 우리도 그 흐름 속에 작은 시내를 이루고 있지 않은가, 자신이 속한 지역 속에서 교육을 중심으로 한 작은 공동체 모델을 만들어가면서 아시아인, 세계인으로 살아가는 네트워크를 조금씩 쌓아갈 때이다. 이번에 IDEC은 열리지 못하였지만 그동안 노력한 청소년들과 민주교육 관계자들이 생명의 그물망을 만들어가고 그 속에서 새로운 문명을 준비하고 공동체적 삶을 모색할 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 하는 바람이다.  



A Democratic Learning Community through Autonomy and Solidarity

The world is inter-connected. Unfortunately, the connections can be positive at times but it can throw us into confusion when it leads to a negative situation, as it did this time. We are feeling the effects of a non-essential factor which influenced and damaged something which is substantial. We are frustrated that we are not able to hold the IDEC which we prepared whole-heartedly, and we are disappointed that we are not able to meet the members of the world democratic community who we have awaited for so long. Without a doubt, materialism and the destruction of environment with   the logic of unlimited development as an excuse and pursued by neo-liberal globalization, will probably go on to threaten the whole world.  

It won’t be easy but we have to make a new bond. That bond will be the network of life and the extensive community of people who seek a substantial life. That is the small but definite struggle of people who think deeply about creating a true civilization, and it should be a democratic movement which tries to overcome all conditions dependent on materials and threaten life. That is the struggle to create a new life virus which fights against the vicious virus which damages lives.  

At the center of it all is education/learning. There is an imperative need for liberated areas where we can experiment with true democracy and realize autonomy, free from unilateral education which turn many people into losers and keep them in the vicious cycle of poverty. The majority of people are being governed by the logic of a ruling minority. This is because the majority of people who are not conscious of their live and dignity, are subordinate to the logic of the ruling minority and live under the illusion that that is their own logic. These are times, more than ever, which demand from true alternative education or democratic education, creative minds towards a new world and a disobedience towards what is not right. 

The world in the 21st century faces many difficult problems.

The first is the ecological crisis. Living an ecological live implies the fundamental change in the attitude towards live. It means to be free from thinking that making much money and consuming as much represents success and happiness, and a change to seeking happiness in a simple and uncomplicated live. Undemocratic education stipulates that people who consume carelessly are successful people, incites competition rather than cooperation, and have no reserves whatsoever in maximizing individual selfishness. We are all interconnected. Not only are our lives connected to other lives, but we are able to maintain those lives because of its connection to nature. These are times which require us to be conscious of our existence as human beings who are connected and for a community which does not look upon nature as something to be owned.

Second, is the social polarization phenomenon. The phenomenon which concentrates materials and culture on a small minority is a common phenomenon all over the world. Under the education we received, there is no room for discussing survival based on competition, or the situation in which the majority are forced into supporting roles. Is it impossible to improve the quality of live and to lead  culturally abundant lives in a evenly poor society? Humankind have perhaps steadily carried out communal experiments on co-existence, and the monastery movement which have preserved longer than nations imply the possibility of a simple, symbiotic live of meditation and service, labor and learning. There is a yearning to sublate the mold of wrong education/learning which rationalizes social polarization and to create models of a learning community.

Third, is the alienation of human beings. The modern man who has lost the link of connection is isolated and carry a hurt that comes from it.. Humans have souls which cannot be consoled by materialistic solutions and thus live in pain and difficulty. True learning should heal and communicate with the people who cannot find themselves, share love or respond to nature. This is a yearning for a recovery of true spirituality, for a communal human being who seeks hope in relationship and does not define happiness only through what can be seen.   

Closely observe current flow all over the world which is quietly preparing for an alternative civilization and making the bondage of live together. We too are a small stream which is part of this current, building a small community model focusing on learning in the region of we live in, as Asians and global citizens accumulating our network little by little. We were not able to hold IDEC this time but it is hoped that the efforts of the young people and the people related to democratic education, becomes an opportunity to make a network of live and inside that network prepare for a new civilization and community live.
