Self Introduction

My name is Toto and I study video in Haja Production School. I’ve been in Haja for 3 years. I am interested in learning about other cultures and languages, meeting people from different environments. I want to meet the youth in Maesot and ask them what they want to learn and why, and for what? Because this is the concern that I have right now. I hope we can learn from each other by answering each others’ questions. Also, I want to share my concerns on social issues such as climate change. I know that our focus on social issues will be different because we are living in a different environment but I think there are some things which should be considered by everyone when we are living the same time.

메솟에 왜 가는지

나는 메솟에 가서 그곳의 십대들을 만나 무엇을 배우고 싶고, 왜, 그리고 무엇을 위해서 배우고 싶은지 묻고 싶다. 왜냐하면 이것이 바로 내가 고민하고 있는 것이고 우리가 서로의 질문에 대답하며 스스로 답을 찾아갈 수 있길 바라기 때문이다. 또한 내가 가지고 있는 사회 문제들에 대해서도 나누고 싶다. 예를 들어 기후변화 시대 이슈 같은 것 말이다. 우리는 서로 다른 환경에 있고 삶의 조건도 다르기 때문에 각자가 집중하고 있는 문제들이 다를 것이다. 하지만 어떤 문제들은 모두가 함께 생각해봐야 하는 것들이 있다고 생각한다. 우리는 동시대에, 하나의 세계 아래 살고 있기 때문이다. 메솟에 가기 전 버마의 역사와 현재 상황에 대해 조사하고 관심가진 것도 단지 직접 그들을 만날 것이기 때문이 아니라 기후변화가 글로벌 이슈이듯, 버마의 문제도 글로벌 이슈라고 생각해서이다. 분명 메솟 현장 학습이라는 것이 버마 문제를 알게 되는 계기가 되긴 했지만 그렇다고 현장 학습이 끝나고 다시 무관심해지진 않을 것이다. 최근에 비욘드 랭군과 홍콩영화인 '천수위의 밤과 안개'(메트로폴리스에 살고 있는 개인들의 공허함, 고독 등을 얘기하는)를 이어서 보면서 '내가 살고 있는 사회와 환경'에 대해 문제 의식을 갖고 발언하는 것과 그보다 더 넓게, 현재 내가 경험할 수 없는 종류의 상황과 사회적 이슈에 공감하는 것에 대한 갈등이 생겼다. 나는 서울, 혹은 한국 뿐만 아니라 지구에 속해있는 시민이기 때문에 글로벌한 이슈를 무시하면 안 된다는 생각을 하지만 실제로 내가 어떤 것에 대해 더 집중하고, 그것을 내 이슈로 끌고 가서 작업을 한다고 했을 때는 도시속 문제나, 내 실제 주변에 대해 말하게 되는 것 같다. 지난 학기 시민에 대해 생각하고, 영상을 통해 행동하는 시민이 되자고 스스로 다짐했지만 아직 내가 앞으로 쭉 집중하고자 하는 이슈에 대해서는 더 찾아볼 필요성을 느낀다. 나는 이 모든 것 중에 무엇을 더 보는 사람이 될 것인가. 이것이 나의 가장 큰 고민이고 메솟 현장 학습을 통해 지금까지 내가 쉽게 접하지 못했던 문제들을 인식하고, 그것에 공감하고, 사람들을 만나는 경험을 하면서 내가 집중할 이슈를 찾아가고 싶다.

My Haja Production School
- Learning to look and participate in our surroundings and taking action.

In HPS(Haja Production School) we don’t have a specific text book but we participate in civil culture workshops, consider looking into society very important and at the same time, we practice expressing our thoughts through what we like to do, such as music, design and video. 

When I first came to Haja I was only concerned about my personal issues such as what I like and what I don’t like, what I am afraid of. I never thought I belonged to a community.  But through participating in projects like ‘living literacy’ and ‘civil culture workshop’ which was about learning and understanding the society that I live in, I realized that I wasn’t the only person living in this world. I learned that I was living in the time of climate change where nature is being destroyed by human greed and convenience, and that many people still die because they fought against authority. From then I started to think about myself within my community and society. 

A few months ago we talked about the identity of a ‘citizen’. What we mean by ‘citizen’ is a person who looks not only into themselves but also looks into their surroundings, realize and understand the problems and take action to solve these problems.

Then we can ask ourselves, “How are we going to act? Act through what?” In my case I will say I want to act through my videos, that I have been studying in Haja. Acting doesn’t always mean demonstrating in the streets. I think we are able to report the problems of society by video, music and drawings as well. When I want to keep making videos I will always remember my role as a member of the society. I won’t close my eyes on the global issues or my surroundings but I will always speak about it in my videos.
