------------- About SWB Schools
Without Borders (SWB) is a youth-run, Canadian charity that is
responding to the need to make learning more accessible for today's
youth. What We Do In
partnership with dynamic and established NGOs in Canada, Brazil, Kenya,
Nepal, India, and Thailand, SWB provides hands-on/project-based
learning experiences for today's youth that: 1. Create positive spaces for young people to develop their skills, experiences and confidence; 2. Provide guidance for youth to turn raw idealism into responsible action; 3. Build durable community networks that allow youth to learn from each other by sharing their culture and experiences. Currently
we run Community Projects in Brazil and Kenya, Volunteer Placements
abroad, arts-based community development initiatives and are creating a
youth resource centre with the "Re-Mix" project in Toronto. Our Mission To
develop lasting learning communities through innovative youth-led
initiatives that facilitate youth engagement and responsible leadership. Our Vision Encouraging
youth to "be connected, get informed, and start something." At Schools
Without Borders we believe in the power and strength of young people to
make meaningful contributions towards the betterment of their own
communities and the world at large. We have seen the positive and
multiplying effects that accessible learning can have on today's youth
and will continue to develop effective tools and resources to further
engage young people worldwide. Ponto BR Community Photography Program [Rio de Janeiro, Brazil] At
the end of 2006, SWB successfully ran a 6-week pilot photography
program at the Ponto BR Project, in Vila Aliança. The program involved
9 youth, who shot over 40 rolls of film during the course of the
program. The participants were given simple point-and-shoot cameras and
assignments to fulfill each week. The course was designed to be
accessible by people from all skill levels. Covering the most basic
technical concepts of photography, more emphasis was placed on
individual creativity and personal expression of each youth. By
projects-end, each student chose 15 of their best photos and put
together their own portfolio. We are conducting further evaluation of
the course and developing curriculum for a sustainable year-long media
arts program with IBISS and Ponto BR. Gramacho Film Project [Rio de Janeiro, Brazil] Two
years ago SWB began working with a young group of recyclers at one of
South America’s largest landfill, Jardim Gramacho. The group was in the
midst of a battle with local officials who wanted to privatize the
landfill, which would result in the displacement of a community of 40
000 people. In response, the youth in the community created a
collectors movement and undertook the production of their own
documentary film about the consequences of the city’s plan to close the
site. The collective has made strong strides with the local government,
currently in the midst of negotiating construction of their own
recycling plant. The collectors themselves are documenting every step
of this process. We look forward to having a full-length film by the
end of 2007. Turning The Tables [Havana, Cuba] Turning
the Tables was SWB’s fi rst ever hip-hop exchange. Bringing together
youth from Toronto with a group of hip hop artists from Havana, Cuba,
the project focused on building a recording studio in Havana while
participating in the Almendares Hip Hop Festival. The Canadian
participants trained themselves in sound engineering for two months
before the project at Inner City Visions (Toronto) in preparation.
Overcoming numerous obstacles, participants embraced the Cuban way of
“inventos” - fi nding creative responses to their many challenges.
Turning the Tables’ impact was profound beyond the means of hip-hop,
off ering an incredible learning opportunity while developing tangible
life-skills for the participants. Many of the Turning the Tables youth
continue to design and lead projects in Toronto. ] Creativity Unleashed [Toronto, Canada] In
response to Toronto’s “summer of the gun” SWB worked with the
UN-mandated University for Peace to host 10 dynamic Brazilian community
practioners/ animators from IBISS as part of Creativity Unleashed:
Community Innovations to Build Urban Peace. This exchange took to the
streets of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) with a series of arts-based
workshops, open dialogues, school/community visits and performances.
People-to-people exchanges were especially profound as youth from
diverse backgrounds were able to connect through activities such as
graffi ti, break dancing and percussion, to name a few. From these
activities came dialogue, rich with global perspectives on issues
ranging from identity to urban, structural and cultural violence. Blitz Film Camp [Toronto, Canada] In
October of 2006 SWB worked with Mobile Jam Fest, Canadian Heritage, The
National Film Board and the Grassroots Youth Collaborative to deliver
an intensive three-day film workshop. The goal of Blitz was for small
groups of youth to produce two-minute video pieces on the theme of
identity to submit to The Mobile Jam Fest (MJF) for the opportunity to
win $10K in tuition to any university in Canada. Six young professional
fi lmmakers acted as facilitators and executive producers for the
projects and guided the process for the groups. Blitz was a success
beyond expectations. One of the films won the top prize at MJF and SWB
is now working on growing the initiative with support from ArtReach. ![]() ---------
