Everyday Language: Contemporary dance in English

This will be a 2-hour contemporary dance workshop in which participants are given a taste of the possibilities of ‘speaking’ through movement. Through-out the workshop, we will explore ways that dance and language intersect, expanding our movement vocabulary and experiencing a healthy dose of fun.

This workshop will expose participants to the idea that movement is a language with many possibilities. And, it will allow them to experience an English learning environment where dance and fun become part of the learning experience, providing an alternative to standard English practice.

We will begin with a warm-up that will engage all of the body through a range of movement patterns.  This will be connected to the introduction of basic vocabulary specific to dance.  Next, we will move through a variety of creative exercises that utilize improvisation, play, and team-work to engage the creativity of the participants.  Finally, we will cool-down with some stretches, followed by a chance to discuss and feedback about the workshop.

This workshop will draw on Mirae’s experience working with community groups, teenagers, and children in various capacities. As an English teacher, dance instructor, gymnastics coach, and camp counselor, Mirae has brought her passion for creativity and movement to people of different ages and cultures. The workshop will use inspiring, current music and will be geared towards all youth, of all dance abilities.

Open-Source, Creative Code, and Urban Media Ecology

This workshop will introduce participants to several interlocking ideas to do with technology, democracy, programming, and city space.  The goal of this workshop is to expand participant’s knowledge of open-source concepts while empowering them in their use of technology and their understanding of its possibilities.

In two hours we will introduce the concept of open-source software and hardware, providing several examples of projects that have been collectively developed by communities.  We will provide a basic introduction to Processing – a free, open-source programming tool – and allow them to experience and play with the code from one of our ‘Graffiti Research Lab Germany’ projects.  We will end with a discussion on the role of public space today, and current possibilities for artists and technology in the urban environment.

We bring several years experience as artists and teachers to this workshop, having introduced digital graffiti concepts, basic programming, and technology though festivals and exhibitions in Canada and through-out Europe.  We will also bring our experience as English teachers, providing clear learning tools, such as a vocabulary list, etc.

This will be a two hour introductory workshop taught in English.  Participants will need access to computers – either their own laptops or desk tops at the centre – and a wireless internet connection.  Some translation would be helpful, if possible.
