Nuked and X-rayed

With all the events of the few weeks following 3/11, I often had difficulty in focusing and thinking clearly. But while a bit confused, I was hoping that going through this would make me more courageous and creative. And now that I have come out of the tunnel, I feel much better and positive, and see things more clearly.

3월 11일 이후 몇 주간에 걸친 모든 사건들로 하여, 나는 종종 명료하게 초점을 맞추거나 생각을 하는데 있어서 어려움을 겪었다. 그러나 약간의 혼란스러움 속에서, 나는 이를 통해 더욱 용기를 갖고 창의적일 수 있기를 희망하고 있었다. 지금 나는 터널을 빠져 나와, 한결 기분이 나아지고 긍정적이며, 그리고 일들이 보다 명료해지고 있다. 

What Japan has experienced since 3/11 is like X rays; yes, all of us and our society were X-rayed and have now become transparent. What do I see? That what we need now is a bit of silence, time for mourning, prayer, and awe. We must contemplate on the dead and realize, as Thich Nhat Hanh said in his recent message to Japan, that part of ourselves, part of the earth, has died, and the dead is and will be in us forever.

3월 11일 이래 일본이 경험한 것은 X-레이와 같은 것이다. 그렇다. 우리 모두와 우리 사회는 (X-레이처럼) 감추어져 있었지만 지금은 투명해졌다. 나는 무엇을 본 것인가? 지금 우리가 필요한 것은 약간의 침묵과, 비탄과 기도, 그리고 경외를 위한 시간이다. 우리는 죽은 사람들에 대하여 사려 깊은 마음을 가져야 하며 Thich Nhat Hanh가 최근 일본인에 대한 메시지에서 언급한 것처럼, 우리 자신의 한 부분이요, 지구의 한 부분이 죽은 것이며, 그리고 그들은 지금도, 영원히 우리 안에 존재할 것이라는 것을 깨달아야만 한다.

We are shocked to see in front of our own eyes our arrogance and the illusion that we can somehow control our Mother Earth. The Earth that created the great tsunami is the same Earth that has been giving everything to nurture us. We must re-instill the sense of awe that we might have been missing for a long time. We must meditate so that we can rediscover a way to reconnect ourselves to our Mother.

우리는 우리의 어머니인 지구를 어떻게 해서든 조절(통제)할 수 있다는 오만과 착각을 우리 자신의 눈앞에서 목격하는 충격을 겪었다. 엄청난 쓰나미를 야기하는 지구는 우리를 양육하기 위해 모든 것을 제공해주는 지구와 같은 지구이다. 우리는 오랫동안 잃어버리고 살았던 경외감을 다시 마음에 되새겨야 한다. 우리 자신과 우리의 어머니인 지구를 다시 잇기 위한 방법을 재발견할 수 있도록 마음을 쏟아야한다. 

We see clearly that we have been a part of this civilization and its violent system built upon our own greed, hatred and ignorance, or what Buddhists call the three fundamental poisons. Instead of accusing TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) and the governments, we must realize that it is we who created this monster called TEPCO that has become powerful enough to control governments, media and other big businesses. Yes, they had a kind of dictatorship, and we were willing to support and embrace it, increasing our consumption of electricity 5 times since the 70’s. With their massively financed “All Denka (entirely electrified homes)” campaign, they have been successfully made us believe that more and more nuclear plants are necessary to live comfortably. 
 
우리는 분명히 알고 있다. 우리가 우리 자신의 욕심, 증오와 무지, 혹은 불자들이 세 가지 근본적인 독이라고 부르는 것들로 점철된 문명과 그것의 폭력적인 시스템의 한 부분인 것을. TEPCO(도쿄전력회사)와 정부를 고소하는 대신에, 우리는 정부와 매체와 다른 어마어마한 사업을 통제하기에 충분할 만큼 엄청난 힘을 가진 TEPCO라 불리는 괴물을 창조한 장본인이 바로 우리 자신임을 깨달아야만 한다. 그렇다. 그들은 일종의 독재력을 가지고 있다. 그리고 우리는 70년대 이래 5배나 전력소비를 증강하면서 그들을 기꺼이 지지하고 받아들였다. 막대한 재정을 쏟은 "All Denka(전기로 완전무장한 집들)"캠페인과 함께 그들은 우리로 하여금 편안한 삶을 위해 더 많은 핵발전소가 필요하다는 것을 믿게 하는데 성공하였다. 

The fisherman-philosopher Masato Ogata once said “Chisso is me.” He is a survivor and witness of the Minamata environmental crisis and was referring to the powerful Chisso Corporation that caused the mercury poisoning of the ocean killing innumerable lives including humans. Yes, TEPCO is me.

어부요 철학자인 Masato Ogata는 일찍이 "Chisso(회사 이름임)는 나다"라고 말했다. 그는 Minamata 환경위기에서 살아남은 생존자요 목격자이며 인간을 포함한 무수한 생명들을 죽이는 대양 수은 중독을 야기시킨 영향력 있는 Chisso 회사(법인)에 대하여 언급한 것이었다. 그렇다. TEPCO는 나다. 
 
One of the most important lessons we learn and relearn from the events of 3/11 and after is that our way of living was created and barely maintained only by causing irreparable damage to the Earth, thus curtailing the possibility of a good future. Themass media is now busy orchestrating a cheerful chorus of “recovery” and “reconstruction.” But the question is what we are going to reconstruct? 
 
3/11과 그 후 사건들로부터 우리가 배우고 또 배워야할 가장 중요한 교훈 중 하나는 우리 삶의 방식이 지구에게 돌이킬 수 없는 손해를 끼치는, 이와 같은 좋은 미래의 가능성을 잘라먹는 것에 의해서만 야기되고 간신히 유지된다는 것이다. 대중매체는 지금 "회복"과 "재건"의 유쾌한 합창을 바쁘게 나발 불고 있다. 그러나 문제는 우리가 무엇을 재건하느냐 하는 것이다. 

The same kind of towns and villages that have been proven too many times in history to be so vulnerable? The centralized
massive energy system that has made our democracy hollow and has made the rural communities and remote regions enslaved by the big cities, electric power companies and central government? Reconstruct the banks and walls to protect the 50 plus nuclear power reactors, and make the reactors themselves strong enough to beat the next challenges of earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, floods and landslides? 
 
피해입기가 너무 쉬운 것으로 역사 속에서 수도 없이 입증되어 온 같은 유형의 도시와 마을을(우리가 재건한다)? 우리의 민주주의를 헐겁게 만들고 시골과 오지들을 대도시들과, 전력회사 캠페인과 중앙정부에 의해 노예화시키는 중앙집중식 막대한 에너지 시스템을? 50개 이상의 원자로를 보호하는 둑과 벽을 건설한다? 그리고 지진, 쓰나미, 태풍, 홍수와 산사태 등의 다음 도전과 싸울 수 있을 만큼 충분히 강한 원자로를 만든다? 
 
Recover the once famous Japanese technology and the invincible “kamikaze spirit” that would make no more mistakes and neglects like the ones we witnessed this time? Reinvent the once miraculously growing economy that required us to endlessly consume, to build all those nuke and other power stations, to destroy much of our once healthy ecosystems,
and to sacrifice our rural communities and their beautiful landscapes?
 
우리가 이번에 목격한 것과 같은 그런 더 이상의 실수와 소홀함이 없도록 해줄 일찍이 유명했던 일본 과학기술과 넘나볼 수 없는 "가미가제 정신"을 회복한다? 모든 원자력발전소와 다른 발전소를 세우고, 과거 건강했던 생태계를 무장 파괴하고, 우리의 시골 마을과 그 아름다운 풍경을 희생시키고, 우리에게 끊임없이 소비하도록 요구하는 기적적인 경제 성장을 재발명한다? 

I can already hear politicians in future elections talk loudly of those “reconstructions.” But then we will have to remember that we can never reconstruct the world without the horrifying amount of toxic nuclear waste which will be with us for thousands of years to come.

나는 이미 정치인들이 앞으로의 선거에서 "재건"을 크게 말하는 소리를 들을 수 있다. 그러나 그때 우리는 기억해야할 것이다. 수천 년을 우리와 함께 남아 있을 소름끼칠 정도의 엄청난 양의 유독 핵폐기물을 만들어 내지 않고는 결코 세상을 재건할 수 없다는 것을. 
 
Every step we made during the last several decades with more and more nuclear reactors was to make both the reconstruction of a healthy past and the construction of a healthy future harder and harder. Put another way; the reconstruction of a pre-3/11 world would mean extinguishing the remaining hope for a healthy, sustainable world. So
let us say No to “reconstruction” of our previous Japan and choose from the remaining possibilities.
 
최근 수십 년 동안 우리가 내딛은 모든 걸음은 더욱 더 많아진 핵원자로와 함께 건강한 과거의 재건과 건강한 미래의 건설을 더 견고히 하고자 한 것이었다. 3/11일 이전으로 세상을 돌려놓기 위한 재건은 건강하고, 지속가능한 세상에 대한 남아 있는 희망마저 꺼버리는 것을 의미한다. 그러니 이전의 일본 "재건"은 아니다 라고 말하고 남아 있는 가능성으로부터 선택하도록 하자. 
 
I can also hear clever people repeat the same old pre-3/11 stuff, saying that without giving an alternative, the argument against nuclear power is not persuasive. To this, I must repeat what the political scientist Douglas Lummis once said; the alternative to nuclear power is no nuclear power. Let us stop acting as if we still have a choice. We cannot afford another disaster, and that’s how disastrous our situation is.
 
나는 교활한 사람들이 대안 없는 원자력에 대한 논쟁은 설득력이 없다고 말하면서 3/11 이전으로 돌아가자는 낡은 말을 똑같이 반복하는 것도 들을 수 있다. 이에 대하여, 나는 정치학자인 Douglas Lummis가 일찍이 했던 말을 반복하지 않을 수 없다. 원자력에 대한 대안은 원자력이 아닌 것이다. 우리가 아직도 선택의 여지가 있는 것처럼 행동하지 말자. 우리는 다른 재앙에 대한 여유가 없으며, 그것은 우리의 입지가 얼마나 참혹한지 말해주는 것이다. 

This is a new era that has started on the March 11th. This is the age of what the Buddhist philosopher Joanna Macy called the “Great Turning,” that has been prepared for in many parts of the world. According to her, the Great Turning has been occurring on three simultaneous levels; environmental movements, anti-globalization and re-localization activism, and personal, spiritual awakening. Let us, too, join in the creative process with the new vision given by the 3/11. 

지금은 3월 11일에 출발한 새로운 시대이다. 불교철학자 Joanna Macy가 “위대한 전환”이라고 명명한, 세상의 많은 부분에서 준비되어온 시대다. 그녀에 따르면, 위대한 전환은 세 가지 동시적인 수평선상에서 일어났다. 즉 환경 운동, 반세계화와 재지방분권운동, 그리고 개인적(인간적), 영적 각성.       

Of course, there are not too many reasons to be optimistic. Even if we turn around and shut down all the nuclear plants today, we have to spend decades to make sure that all the reactors continue to be cooled, and many generations after us have to invent ways to deal with the enormous amount of toxic nuclear waste that is already here.  So shall we continue our pursuit of wealth and luxury without turning around? Why not stopping later instead of now, if it’s too late anyway? 

물론, 낙관할 일만은 아니다. 비록 우리가 오늘 모든 원자력발전소를 전환하거나 폐쇄 조치를 취한다고 해도 우리는 모든 원자로가 냉각되는 것을 확인하기까지 수십 년을 허비해야한다. 그리고 이미 이 땅에 있는 어마어마한 양의 유해 핵 폐기물질을 처리할 방법을 우리 이후의 많은 세대가 고안해내야 할 것이다. 그러니 (삶의 방식을) 전환하지 않고 재화와 사치에 대한 추구를 계속할 것인가? (지금 대신에 나중에 멈추는 것은 어떤가, 어쨌든 그것이 너무 늦는다면?)      

Again let us stop acting as if there is a choice. We must turn around not later but now. And that is if we are still interested in human survival.  Let us become a “nuclear guardian” as Joanne Macy has urged us, accepting responsibility for the nuclear materials produced in our lifetimes.  Macy is not optimistic, either, but her words are deeply consoling. 

마치 선택의 여지가 있는 것처럼 행동하는 것을 그만두자. 우리는 나중이 아닌 바로 지금 돌아서야 한다. 만약 우리가 아직도 인간의 생존에 관심이 있다면 말이다. 우리 모두 일생 동안 생산한 핵물질에 대한 책임을 받아들이며 Joanne Macy가 우리에게 촉구한 “핵 감시인”이 되자.  Macy도 역시 낙관론자가 아니다. 그러나 그녀의 말은 깊은 위로를 담고 있다.    

“Even if the Great Turning fails to carry this planetary experiment of ecological revolution onward through linear time, it still is worth it. It is a homecoming to our true nature.”  (Joanna Macy “The Great Turning”) 

비록 위대한 선회가 생태적 혁명을 위한 지구 실험에 실패를 가져온다고 해도, 그것은 여전히 가치가 있다. 그것은 우리의 진정한 자연(성품)으로 귀향하는 것이다.(Joanna Macy “The Great Turning”)  

Remember that the Chinese characters we use for the word “kiki (crisis)” can mean both danger and opportunity at once. This must be a great opportunity for us to grow spiritually, while stop growing materially, learning how to slow down, scale down and simplify. The real wisdom is to know how we can downshift joyfully and thankfully. This must be the moment of truth. 

우리가 “kiki(위기)"라는 말에 사용하는 한자가 위험과 기회를 동시에 의미한다는 것을 기억하자. 지금은 우리가 속도를 줄이고, 규모를 줄이고 단순화하면서 물질적인 성장을 멈추고 영적으로 성장할 위대한 기회임에 틀림이 없다. 진정한 지혜는 즐겁게 저속 기어로 바꿀 줄 아는 방법을 아는 것이다. 지금은 틀림없는 진리의 때이다.
