 Hojo was listening to hiiocks talk about a difficult topic. Hojo fell asleep. Hojo dreamed. In the dream, there was a forest.

 The forest burned down. Other animals almost all fled, but only one little bird (“named Kurikindi”) barely carried water with its little beak. Hojo told Kurikindi “It is useless work.” then, Kurikindi replied “I am doing what I can.” Upon hearing that, some animals helped to put out the fire. But in the end, the forest was completely burned. Hojo was worried about this and asked herself, “What can I do?”

 For a long time she was lost in deep thought, Suddenly, she felt something wriggling by her side. There was an earthworm. Hojo realized what she can do. She planted new life and cultivated the destroyed ground. The earthworm got around the soil and pooed everywhere. It had good effects on the ground. Gradually, the forest was recovered.

 Suddenly a fork crane and a bulldozer came into the forest. They cut down trees, destroyed the farm, and damaged the forest. Hojo heard about the reason for the situation from a raccoon.

 The raccoon said “We all should transform into humans to demonstrate and protect this forest. We used magic to show an imaginary forest full of hope. However the people continued to build golf courses. In this forest there were very diverse natives life but they all left this field.”

 The raccoon ran to its friends. They held each others hand and spun around, and sang a song loudly. There was one tree left at the center of the circle of raccoons. Hojo approached the last tree. A larva was living in the tree. It was eating leaf. Hojo was angry so she tried to catch the larva. At that time, a raccoon stopped her from catching it and said, “The larva will be a butterfly. It moves the tree’s pollen and bear fruits. Then there will be more trees.”

 Hojo closed her eyes and imagined the scene raccoon spoke of.

 Then when she opened her eyes, Hojo saw a butterfly come out from it’s cocoon.

호조는 희옥스의 어려운 이야기를 듣고 있었다. 호조는 깜빡 잠이 들어버렸다. 호조는 꿈을 꾸었다.

숲에 불이 났다. 다른 동물들은 다 피신하는데 크리킨디라는 작은 새만 불을 끄려고 분주하게 돌아다녔다. 그런 것 해봤자 쓸데없는 일이라고 알려줬다. 그러자 크리킨디가 말했다. “나는 내가 할 수 있는 일을 할 뿐이야.” 크리킨디의 말을 들은 몇몇 동물들도 불을 끄는 일에 참여했지만 결국 숲은 타버리고 말았다. 호조는 우리가 할 수 있는 일이 무엇일까 고민하며 타버린 땅을 바라보았다.

한참 생각에 잠겨있는데 옆에서 꿈틀꿈틀 무언가 느껴졌다. 그곳을 보니 지렁이 한 마리가 있었다. 호조는 자신이 할 수 있는 일이 떠올랐다. 호조는 타버린 땅에 새 생명을 심고 경작했다. 지렁이는 땅 속을 돌아다니면서 똥을 싸 땅에 좋은 영향을 줬다. 점차 숲이 개선되고 생태가 회복되었다.

갑자기 불도저와 포크레인들이 숲으로 들어왔다. 나무들을 밀어내고 농장을 짓밟았다.

호조는 너구리 한 마리에게 이유를 들을 수 있었다.

“우리는 모두 인간으로 변신해서 숲을 보호하기 위해 시위했어. 우리는 희망으로 가득찬 상상의 숲을 마술을 부려 인간들에게 보여줬어. 하지만 인간들은 결국 여기에 골프장을 지으려고 해. 이 숲엔 다양한 동물들이 살고 있었어. 하지만 그들은 떠나버리고 말았어.“

너구리는 친구들에게로 뛰어갔다. 그들은 서로 손을 잡고, 빙글빙글 돌고, 크게 노래를 불렀다. 그 한가운데에는 마지막 남은 나무 한 그루가 있었다. 호조는 나무에 가까이 다가갔다. 애벌레 한 마리가 나뭇잎을 갉아먹고 있었다. 화가 난 호조는 애벌레를 잡으려고 했지만 너구리가 달려와서 말렸다. “이 애벌레는 나비가 될 거야. 나비는 나무의 꽃가루를 나르고 열매를 맺개 해. 나무는 더 많아질거야.”

호조는 눈을 감고 상상했다. 너구리가 말한 그 모습을….

그리고 다시 눈을 떴을 때, 애벌레의 옆에 있었던 고치 하나에서 막 나비가 나오고 있었다.
