The official name of Haja Center is Seoul Youth Factory for Alternative Culture (SYFAC). It was established in 1999. Seoul Metropolitan Government entrusted this building to Yon Sei University. In the 1990s, Korea was in chaos due to the serious International Monetary Fund(IMF) crisis. So there were a huge lack of jobs. Many youth's hopes were destroyed. Another social crisis was the students' refusal to attend regular schools. Many students were pressured by entrance examination. As a result, many students killed themselves, or dropped out of schools. Haja Production School was built as a temporary autonomous zone for these youth. To this day, many young people are trying hard under the motto of [making a living through what we want to do] in HPS.

하자센터의 공식적인 이름은 서울시립 청소년 직업체험센터 이다. 이 곳은 1999년에 설립되었다. 연세대학교가 서울시로부터 위탁을 받아 지어졌다. 1990년대에 한국 사회는 심각한 IMF로 인해 혼란스러웠다. IMF로 인해 청년실업 문제는 심각했다. 많은 청소년들의 희망이 사라졌다. 그때 당시 또 다른 사회적 위기는 학생들의 부등교였다. 많은 학생들이 입시로 인해 스트레스를 받고 있었다. 그 결과로 많은 청소년들이 자살을 하거나, 제도권 학교를 자퇴했다. 하자작업장학교는 이러한 청소년들을 위해 일시적 자율 공간이 되어주고 있다. 많은 청소년들은 [하고 싶은 일을 하며 먹고 살기]라는 모토를 중심으로 하자작업장학교 안에서 열심히 작업을 한다.
