Anthropologist Peter M. Gardner Special Lectures "Rethinking Individualism: An Anthropological Perspective” Peter M. Gardner (Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, University of Missouri-Columbia) April 27 to May 6 (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm), at Billingsley Hall 110 Is individualism an intrinsic value of Modern Europe? Does it have something to do with the rise of capitalism? Can we find individualism among agrarian peoples or hunting and gathering tribal societies? We will explore individualism in human history through this special lecture series. Professor Gardner’s main fieldwork has been with Paliyans and Dehcho Dene, both being hunting and gathering tribes. Paliyans live in thorny forest on the dry eastern side of hills in South India and Dehcho Dene dwell in Canada’s cold Northwest Territories. Individualism is the main organizing principle of both societies. We will take a journey to these hunting and gathering societies, then rethink individualism in the modern world we live in. April 27 : Individualism in Paliyan Hunting and Gathering Society May 6 : Mastering Fieldwork and Participant ObservationApril 29: A Comparative View of Individualistic Societies May 4 : Individualism and its Problems in Modern Societies * All lectures are conducted in English. This Lecture Series is a part of Global Learning Project initiated by the College of Social Sciences of Yonsei U. Dr. Gardner’s visit has been made possible by a grant from the Fulbright Specialists Program. ---------
