조한의 환경여행에 동참하셨던 나오미가
여정중에 들렀던 에코까페에서 받은 작은 헝겊? 가방에 공정무역 초콜릿을 담아 선물로 전해주셨네요.
그 가방의 겉면에 작은 벌새들에 대한 이야기가 써 있어서 옮깁니다.
(조금 감동 받았음...) :D
크리킨디에 대한 이야기
숲이 타고 있었습니다.
숲속의 동물들은 앞을 다투며 도망을 갔습니다.
하지만 크리킨디(벌새)란 이름의 새는 왔다갔다 하며
작은 주둥이로 물고 온 단 한 방울의 물로 불을 끄느라 분주했습니다.
다른 동물들이 이런 그의 모습을 보고
"저런다고 무슨 소용이 있어"라며 비웃었습니다.
크리킨디는 대답했습니다.
"나는 내가 할 수 있는 일을 할 뿐이야."
숲이 타고 있었습니다.

저희는 "벌새 프로젝트"라 부르는 그룹입니다.
이 크리킨디의 이야기를 남미 안데스 지방의 원주민인 케추아족 친구로부터 듣고 감동을 받았습니다. 그리고 우리가 할 수 있는 것이 무엇일까를 생각해보았습니다. 우선 머리에 떠오른 것이 이 벌새 이야기를 한 사람이라도 더 많은 사람들에게 전달하자는 것이었습니다. 그래서 시작된 것이 이 작은 책자 만들기였습니다.
크리킨디(케추아어로 '황금새'의 뜻을 가짐)는 자그마한 몸에 맞지 않게 커다란 용기를 가지고 있습니다. 하지만 크고 힘도 센 곰은 아기곰을 보호하기 위해 피난을 했어야만 했을지도 모르고, 발 빠른 표범은 자신의 힘센 발로 흙을 차 불을 덮어 끌 수 있다는 것에 생각이 미치지 못했을지 모릅니다. 비를 부를 수 있는 "비의 새"는 물이 불을 끌 수 있다는 것조차 몰랐을지도 모릅니다.
한 사람, 한 사람의 힘은 적지만 이제 인간은 자연계에 커다란 영향력을 끼칠 수 있는 숫자에 도달했습니다. 또 한 개의 물방울이 합쳐질 때 불도 끌 수 있다는 것을 알고 있으며 마음만 먹으면 실행에 옮길 수도 있습니다. 때때로 큰 문제를 앞에 하고 미약한 우린, 우선 "그런 일 해봐야 무슨 소용이 있어"라고 생각해버리고 맙니다. 크리킨디의 이야기를 들려준 케추아족 친구는 이렇게 덧붙였습니다.
"우린 주변의 큰 문제들을 앞에 하고 곧 무력감에 빠져버리기 쉽지만 그때마다 이 벌새의 이야기를 상기해주세요"라고.
자, 그럼 불에 휘말렸던 숲은 어떻게 되었을까요?
불에 타 사라져 버렸을까요? 아니면...
이 줄거리의 끝맺음은 여러분의 손에 달렸답니다.

What I Can Do
the forest was on fire.
all of the animals, insects and birds in the forest rushed to escape.
but there was one little hummingbird named Kurikindi or Golden Bird, who stayed behind.
this little bird went back and forth between water and fire, dropping a single drop of water from its beak onth the fire below.
when the animals saw this they began to laugh at Kurikindi.
"why are you doing that?" they asked.
and Kurikindi replied,
"i am only doing what i can do."

Greetings from the Hummingbird Project
it was our Kechua friend, Andean indigenous people in South America, who told us the hummingbird story. being inspired by the story, we started thinking about "what we can do." the first idea came to our mind was telling the story to as many people as possible. this booklet is one of the fruits of it.
Kurikindi , meaning golden bird in Kechua language, has big courage regardless her tiny body. the big and strong bear, however, might not have choice but running away from the burning forest to protect her baby bears. perhaps quick-footed jaguar didn't notice that he could put the soil over the fire with his strong hind leg. maybe the "rainingbirds" who can call for the rain didn't know that they could extinguish fire with water.
the number of human being became so large as to give a big impact on the earth ecosystem, but each one of us is tiny being. we, however, are lucky to know that if we gather lots of water drops, we can put out the fire. we can do it if we try. we just tend to compare the big task in front of us to our smallness, and think, "my action doesn't make any change."
the Kechua lady who told us the story added that "the problems that surround us are huge so that are easy to be gripped by sense of powerlessness. when you feel like that, please remember this story."
well, what happened to the forest on fire?
is it totally burnt away? or.....?
it is you who describe the sequel to the story.
